Dependent Life Insurance
How the Plan Works
Your Coverage Choices
You may enroll your spouse and your eligible unmarried dependent children for life insurance coverage. You pay the full cost of this coverage. The following coverage options are available:
Family Member | Option 1 | Option 2 | Option 3 |
Spouse | $10,000 | $5,000 | $20,000 |
Each unmarried dependent child under age 26 | $5,000 | $2,500 | $10,000 |
Note: If you are already enrolled for dependent life insurance (and covering other eligible dependent children) at the time of your child’s birth, your child is automatically covered under this plan. Also, the law limits the maximum amount of life insurance coverage for each dependent to not more than 50% of your combined basic and supplemental life insurance coverage.
Proof of Good Health
You must provide proof of your dependents’ good health before coverage can become effective if you:
Enroll for dependent life insurance more than 31 days after your eligibility date
Increase your dependent life insurance coverage during annual enrollment
When you are required to provide proof of good health, you must complete an Evidence of Insurability (EOI) form. Then, DallasNews Corporation Benefits will certify the employer portion. The insurance company will review the form and notify you of its decision.
How Benefits Are Paid
If one of your covered dependents dies, you are automatically the beneficiary of any dependent life insurance benefits you have elected.
If You Become Disabled and Die
If you became totally disabled (as determined by Lincoln Financial) while enrolled for this coverage, the plan would pay a benefit only if you had continued to pay premiums during your absence from work. To receive benefits, you must notify the claims administrator within 12 months of your covered dependent’s death.
